How to Get Rid of an Old Bed or Bed Frame in London

Disposing of an old bed frame in London is trickier than it looks. A double divan can weigh more than a washing machine, an ottoman base hides a gas-lift mechanism that shouldn’t be cut into casually, and a bunk bed has to come apart before it leaves most London flats. The mattress is a separate problem with its own rules, which is why this guide focuses on the frame and base.

The Short Answer: Your Five Options

  1. Give it away or sell it – free, realistic for wooden frames in good condition.
  2. Charity reuse – viable for clean wooden or metal frames.
  3. Council bulky waste – £20–£50. A single frame is usually one item; divan plus headboard often two.
  4. Tip it yourself – free at most London HWRCs, sorted into wood or metal.
  5. Professional removal – £50–£100 for a frame, more for divans with dismantling.

For mattress disposal separately, see our mattress disposal guide.

Know Your Bed Type

  • Wooden slatted frames – easiest. Self-assembly, come apart in reverse with an Allen key.
  • Metal frames – tubular steel, four bolts separate side rails from head/footboard. Scrap value.
  • Divan bases – heavy, don’t come apart easily. King-size exceeds 40 kg. Foam padding inside can put them into upholstered-waste bracket at some HWRCs.
  • Ottoman beds – gas-lift mechanism is a real hazard. See safe-dismantle section below.
  • Bunk beds – come apart into ladder + two frames + uprights. 20–30 minutes with Allen keys.
  • Cots and cot beds – must meet BS EN 716 for reuse. Drop-side cots no longer meet current standard.

Dismantling Without Breaking It (or You)

  • Measure the narrowest doorway and stair turn. Victorian conversions with tight half-landings defeat anything much over 1.8m.
  • Clear floor space around the bed.
  • Label and bag hardware – tape bolts to the rail they belong to.

Slatted bases: lift slats, unbolt side rails, six to ten minutes. Bunk beds: ladder first, separate upper/lower, unbolt corner uprights – two people recommended. Divan bases rarely unbolt; a reciprocating saw through the middle lets you fold it in half. Wear gloves and eye protection – staples fire out unpredictably.

Ottoman Beds: Gas Strut Safety

Ottoman gas struts store genuine lifting force. The safe order:

  1. Remove mattress first. Support platform as it lifts.
  2. With platform raised, disconnect the struts one at a time at their ball joints or bolts.
  3. Lower platform under control.
  4. Dismantle rest like a standard divan.

Never cut across a pressurised strut. If it feels risky, book professional collection – the crew brings the right tools.

Council Bulky Waste

  • Cost: £20–£50 for 3–5 items. Single frame usually one item; divan + headboard often two; bunk often two.
  • Wait: 1–3 weeks.
  • Kerbside only by collection morning.
  • Concessions for means-tested benefits in Lambeth, Southwark, Hackney and others.

See borough-by-borough breakdown.

Taking It to the Recycling Centre

  • Dismantle before loading. Divan bases often need cutting in half to fit a van’s rear doors.
  • Wooden frames go to wood container, metal to metals bay.
  • Divans with heavy padding sometimes routed through POPs container; worth a call first.
  • Van visits need pre-booking 24–48 hours ahead, 4 per month / 12 per year cap.
  • Proof of address required.

  • Single frame, dismantled, ground floor: £50–£70
  • Double/king wooden frame: £60–£90
  • Divan base: £70–£110
  • Ottoman bed: £80–£120
  • Bunk bed: £90–£140
  • Combined with mattress: cheaper per item

Ask for the Environment Agency waste carrier licence number and a waste transfer note. Any London Waste covers all 32 boroughs and can usually collect same-day.

Children’s Beds and Safety Standards

Cots must meet BS EN 716, bunks BS EN 747. Drop-side cots no longer meet the standard and can’t be resold or donated. Recent, clean, complete items are in consistent demand through family-support hubs and borough reuse schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Every London borough accepts bed frames under bulky waste, £20–£50 for 3–5 items, 1–3 week wait. A standard frame is usually one item; divan + headboard often two; bunk can be two. You move it to the kerb yourself.

Tip is free if you can transport it. Council bulky typically £20–£50. Charity free if accepted. Professional £50–£100 for a standard frame, £70–£110 for a divan, £80–£120 for an ottoman.

Yes, at most sites, free. Wooden frames go in wood, metal in the metals bay. Divans with heavy padding sometimes POPs-routed. Van visits need pre-booking.

Most divans don’t unbolt – stapled wooden box covered in fabric. To fit a king-size through a doorway or into a van, cut it in half with a saw. Wear gloves and eye protection because staples fire out when the fabric is cut.

Raise the platform fully, support it, disconnect the gas struts one at a time at their mount points. Lower the platform under control, then dismantle like a divan. Never cut across a pressurised strut.

Generally no. Wooden frames are wood waste; metal is scrap. Divan and ottoman bases with substantial foam are the edge case – sometimes POPs-routed at London HWRCs.
