Waste Containers That Stay on Site

A skip is a one-off. A bin is a routine. If your site produces waste every day for weeks, what you actually need is a container that lives on site and gets emptied on a schedule – no permit to renew each time, no waiting for a wagon when the corner fills up.

We place wheeled bins, enclosed lockable containers and roll-on-roll-off units across all 32 London boroughs, then swap or empty them on a frequency that matches your build. Every exchange comes back with a waste transfer note, and we report what came off site by stream so the figures are ready when your client asks for them.

The right container depends less on how much waste you have than on where the lorry can stand and how long it can stand there. That is the part worth a two-minute phone call: 08 00 599 99 96.

Bin or Skip?

Choose a bin for a site running more than a couple of weeks, for waste that must stay covered or locked, or where a skip permit on the highway would be refused or expensive.

Choose a skip for a single burst of waste with space to stand it – a strip-out, a garden clearance, one bathroom.

Container Types and What They Suit

Wheeled bins – 660L to 1100L

Fit-out, second fix, packaging and offcuts.

These roll through a standard gateway and can live inside a basement car park or a hoarded compound. Best for the lighter, bulkier waste that fills space fast – cardboard, insulation offcuts, plastic packaging. Do not fill them with rubble: the weight limit is reached long before the bin looks full.

Enclosed and lockable containers

Sites with public frontage or fly-tipping problems.

On a London street an open container attracts other people’s waste overnight, and it lands on your transfer note and your bill. A lidded, lockable unit stops that. It also keeps rain out of plasterboard and timber, which matters – wet gypsum is heavier to carry and harder to recycle.

Roll-on-roll-off – 20 to 40 yards

Demolition, strip-outs, groundworks.

For volume work where a skip would need swapping twice a day. RoRo units need a hard standing and a clear run for the lorry – roughly 15 metres of straight approach and no low cables. If your site cannot take that, a compacted bin schedule usually works out better than forcing the access.

Separate Bins Pay for Themselves

One mixed container is the most expensive way to run a site. Mixed construction waste is charged at the highest rate because it has to be picked apart at the transfer station; the same material separated at source is charged as a clean stream, and some of it is worth money rather than costing it.

On most London builds three containers is the sweet spot – inert, mixed, and one for whichever material your job produces in bulk. Adding a fourth rarely pays unless the volume is genuinely there.

  • Inert only – concrete, brick, hardcore, tiles. Kept clean it is crushed into recycled aggregate. See rubble and hardcore collection.
  • Plasterboard – must be kept apart by law; gypsum cannot go to landfill with biodegradable waste. See plasterboard collection.
  • Metal – offcuts, ducting, cable, old radiators. This stream has a scrap value that offsets the container cost.
  • Timber – clean, untreated wood is chipped for board manufacture; painted and treated timber is a separate grade.
  • Mixed – everything that does not sort cleanly into the above.

What Affects the Price

Weight, not just volume. Inert material hits weight limits at a fraction of the container’s capacity.

Exchange frequency. A weekly schedule costs less per tonne than ad-hoc call-outs.

Access and standing time. Red routes, narrow approaches and permit-only streets add cost because the lorry waits.

Contamination. One bag of general rubbish in an inert container re-grades the whole load.

Paperwork and Placement in London

A container on private land – inside the hoarding, on your own forecourt, in a car park – needs no council permission. The moment any part of it sits on the public highway, including a pavement or a parking bay, you need a permit from that borough, and the rules and prices differ between all 32 of them. We will tell you which case you are in before delivery rather than after.

Every collection produces a waste transfer note. As the waste producer the site must keep those for two years, and the Environment Agency can ask for them. If you want the tonnages and recovery rates rolled up for reporting, that is part of our construction site waste management service, and it feeds straight into a site waste management plan.

Building & Construction Waste Services

Different jobs need different set-ups. A kitchen rip-out is not a long-running site, and a tonne of broken concrete is not the same problem as a stack of plasterboard. Pick the one that matches your project – or call us on 08 00 599 99 96 and we’ll tell you which it is.

Construction Waste Bins FAQ

A skip is hired for a job and taken away when it is full. A bin stays on site and is emptied or exchanged on an agreed schedule, so there is no re-booking and no repeated permit. Bins are also usually lidded, which stops rain getting in and stops passers-by adding their waste to your bill.

Only if it stands on the public highway, which includes pavements and parking bays. On private land – inside the hoarding, on a forecourt, in a car park – no permit is needed. Permit cost and conditions are set by each borough, so the answer changes depending on where the site is. Tell us the address and we will confirm before delivery.

A small amount, but a 1100L bin filled with concrete is far too heavy to move safely or lift mechanically. Rubble should go in a dedicated inert container or be collected separately – and keeping it clean means it is crushed into recycled aggregate rather than charged as mixed waste.

As often as the build needs – from daily during a strip-out to fortnightly on a slow fit-out. Most sites start weekly and adjust after the first two exchanges, once the real fill rate is obvious. Changing the schedule costs nothing.

It becomes your waste, on your transfer note and your invoice – and if it contaminates a clean stream it re-grades the whole load. On any site with public frontage a lockable lid pays for itself quickly. See our guidance on fly-tipping clearance if it has already happened.

Yes. Every exchange produces a waste transfer note, and we can report tonnage and recovery rate by stream. We are a licensed waste carrier, but the producer’s duty of care stays with the site: those notes must be kept for two years.
