Why Council Prices Rose in 2024: The POPs Effect
Since January 2023, the Environment Agency has classified almost all upholstered domestic seating as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) waste. Gate fees at licensed Energy-from-Waste sites rose from around £80/tonne pre-2023 to roughly £230/tonne during 2024 – roughly a three-fold increase in raw disposal cost per sofa. That’s why several councils now collect sofas separately or charge more for them (Sutton: £74 for 1–3 sofas or armchairs, against £49 for 1–3 items of other furniture), and why a £20 cash quote in London doesn’t cover licensed disposal – be wary.
