Carpet and Underlay Disposal in London

Carpet is one of the most awkward household items to get rid of. It’s deceptively heavy once rolled, almost impossible to recycle in the usual sense, and leaves behind gripper strips, staples, and underlay crumbs. Industry figures suggest only around 2% of UK carpet is actually recycled – the rest goes to incineration because the face fibres are bonded to a backing that can’t cleanly be separated.

Why Carpet Is Awkward

It’s heavier than it looks. 4m × 3m bedroom: 15–20 kg carpet plus 8–12 kg underlay. A through-lounge can run to 60–80 kg.

Not really recyclable. Synthetic fibres glued to latex/SBR backing. End point is usually energy-from-waste incineration.

Hazards attached. Gripper strips studded with tacks and nails; staples; rubber crumb fragments.

Weights and Sizes

• Small bedroom (8m²): carpet 8–12 kg, underlay 4–6 kg. Rolls to ~2m.
• Double bedroom (12m²): 15–20 kg + 8–12 kg. ~3m roll – usually too long for a hatchback.
• Living room (16–20m²): 22–32 kg + 12–18 kg. Needs cutting into 2–3 rolls.
• Whole flat (50–70m²): 70–110 kg combined.

Wool adds ~30%. Wet carpet can double in weight.

Option 1: The Recycling Centre

• Rolled and tied – pile inwards, twine/cable ties both ends.
• Separate the underlay – most sites prefer them in separate bags.
• Per-visit caps – many London sites cap at one-room equivalent.
• Van rules apply – pre-book 24–48 hours, proof of address.
• Gripper strips – in rigid container (cardboard box), not a plastic sack.

Option 2: Council Bulky Waste

• Cost: £20–£50 for 3–5 items. Carpet usually one item; underlay either bundled or a second item.
• Max length: most councils cap at 1.8m per roll – living-room carpet needs cutting in half.
• Binding: twine or cable ties both ends.
• Underlay: in heavy-duty rubble sacks separately.
• Kerbside only.
• Concessions for means-tested benefits.

Option 3: Reuse and Charity

• Community groups / playgroups (soft-play).
• Stables and small-animal keepers (stable matting).
• Landscape and allotment uses (weed suppressant – though synthetic increasingly refused environmentally).
• Local listings: Freecycle, Olio, Marketplace, Gumtree.

Used fitted carpet with wear, stains, or pet history has essentially no reuse market.

Option 4: Professional Removal

• Single room rolled: £40–£90
• Whole flat (2–3 rooms): £90–£180 in one visit
• Plus other items: per-item cost drops significantly
• Access surcharges: £10–£25 for narrow stairs, no lift, long carries

Ask for the EA licence number and WTN. Book via domestic rubbish removal or the order form.

DIY Carpet Removal Steps

1. Clear the room completely.
2. Start at a corner with pliers to lift off the gripper.
3. Cut into 1m strips from the back with a utility knife.
4. Roll tightly pile inwards, tie both ends.
5. Lift underlay separately into rubble sacks.
6. Lift gripper strips with a wide chisel or pry bar.
7. Sweep for staples with a magnet.
8. Wrap gripper strips in flattened cardboard, tape shut.

Double bedroom takes 45–90 minutes solo.

Wet, Mouldy, Flood-Damaged Carpet

• Contact insurer first – some policies require documentation.
• After 48 hours wet = biohazard: FFP3 mask, gloves, windows open.
• Double-bag underlay in heavy-duty sacks.
• Weight roughly doubles – 50 kg+ per bedroom of saturated carpet.
• Sewage contamination – specialist contractor.

Underlay Types and Trade Waste

PU foam (crumbles), rubber crumb (heavy, clean), felt (lightest). Very old foam (pre-2000s) occasionally had flame retardants – mention to disposer.

Fitter’s offcuts and rip-out waste are commercial waste, not household – need a duty-of-care transfer note via licensed trade-waste collection.

What You Should Not Do

• Leaving rolled carpet next to bin store – fly-tipping, £400+ FPN.
• Cash man-with-a-van without licence check.
• Burning in the garden – toxic smoke, statutory nuisance.
• Stuffing rolls into communal chute or bin.
• Gripper strips in plastic sacks – injures crew.
